Local Gems
The spots locals actually go
Armory Square
One of the best urban neighborhoods in Upstate New York. Cobblestone streets, galleries, boutiques, cocktail bars, and the city’s best restaurants. SU students massively underuse this.
Tipperary Hill
Home of the world-famous upside-down traffic light. Green on top — because the Irish refused to let red sit above green. Stop by Coleman’s Irish Pub while you’re there.
Beak & Skiff Apple Orchard
Voted best apple orchard in the country. Apple picking, cider donuts, and hard cider tasting at the 1911 Tasting Room. A must every October.
Everson Museum of Art
A stunning I.M. Pei-designed building downtown. Film screenings, outdoor yoga, and rotating exhibits. Way underrated.
Skaneateles
One of the most beautiful small towns in New York. Stroll the lake, eat at Gildas or Bluewater Grill, grab Doug’s Fish Fry on the way back.
The 3fifteen Thrift Shop
In Marshall Square Mall. Vintage finds and unique pieces on a budget. A campus staple for building your fit without breaking the bank.
Get Active
Green Lakes State Park
Two stunning turquoise lakes, swimming, paddleboats, hiking trails, and a beach. Free with a car — this is the one.
Clark Reservation State Park
Glacial cliffs, incredible geology, and a plunge pool. Great for a few hours of hiking. Feels like a different world.
Onondaga Lake Park
8+ miles of paved trails for biking, running, and skating. Rent bikes at “Cuse Cycle” right in the park.
Jamesville Reservoir
Swimming, kayaking, disc golf, and picnicking. The go-to for a warm-weather afternoon close to campus.
Chittenango Falls State Park
A dramatic 167-foot waterfall inside a 400-million-year-old gorge. Short hike, massive payoff.
Clinton Square Ice Rink
Open November through March. Winter in Syracuse is real — lean into it. Skate rentals on-site.

Finger Lakes Wine Trail
Wineries along Seneca or Cayuga Lake. Watkins Glen State Park is a must-stop — one of the most stunning gorge hikes in the Northeast.
Ithaca
Cornell’s campus, Ithaca Falls, the Gorges, and a fantastic food scene. “Ithaca is Gorges” is a cliché for a reason.
Erie Canal Museum
An 1850 weighlock building with a full-sized canal boat replica inside. Free. Surprisingly fascinating.
Cooperstown
Baseball Hall of Fame, the Fenimore Art Museum, and one of the most charming small towns in the state.
